Launched in April 2019, the public database 'eAmbrosia - the EU Geographical Indications registers' now includes the geographical indications (GIs) of spirit drinks registered in the European Union. Information available includes their status (applied, published or registered) and a direct link to the legal basis when they are officially protected.
Designed to become the one-stop-shop for EU GIs, eAmbrosia already includes wine GIs, and now the spirit drink GIs (from e-Spirit-Drinks) and, by the end of 2019, agricultural product and food GIs (from DOOR) will be available. eAmbrosia has an easily searchable and intuitive interface which will greatly simplify the search for information about GIs and increase transparency for producers, professionals, companies checking the availability of trade names, national authorities, researchers and anyone curious about European GIs.
EU geographical indications legally protect more than 3,200 names of products that owe their characteristics or reputation to their region of production with its natural environment and skills of local producers. GIs promote the unique characteristics of these specialty products and the traditional expertise of their producers. Each geographical indication has specific legal standards on how the product is made, while also serving as a guarantee for the quality of the products.
